5 Tips To Learning An Instrument
Being able to learn and play an instrument is at the top of a lot of people’s lists. Whether it’s to play with friends, become a member of an orchestra, start a band, or simply learn your favorite melody by yourself, playing an instrument can be a satisfying experience. Yes, absolutely gratifying but also hard.
There’s a lot of hard work and diligence that goes into becoming an instrument player. Having said that there are some steps along the way that can make it less difficult. I have 5 strategies listed below that will get you on your way.
1. Choose An Instrument You Really like – It doesn’t seem earth-shattering but having an instrument that you genuinely like is crucial. There will be instances when you don’t desire to practice or it it’s just too challenging. If you’re learning an instrument you really like you’ll be more inspired to carry on during these times and to take it seriously.
2. Get A Good Teacher – As we all know learning anything from someone who knows how to do it is a big time saver. It’s admirable to learn an instrument on your own and at times even preferable but there’s nothing like an expert to show you the ropes and get you playing better, quicker.
3. Practice! – There’s a joke about an individual who’s a bit lost stopping somebody else on the streets of New York and asking, ‘How do I get to Carnegie Hall?’ The individual answers, ‘Practice, practice, practice!’ It’s fairly obvious but the more you practice (efficiently, that is) the better you get. And if you love it, why not?
4. Use Useful Learning Resources – Apart from a good teacher there are a variety of learning tools out there to enhance your playing. Technique guides, audio CDs, DVDs, recording and playback devices (some keyboards like the Korg SP170 Digital Piano and the Casio PX130 Privia Digital Piano have these built right in), online forums, and so on. You name it, it’s out there. Particularly with our access to the web you won’t be hurting for outside support.
There’s nothing like pulling out a guitar, violin, or clarinet, or sitting down at a piano and playing some piece that you love. Get out there and learn!
