Mallard: How the Blue Streak Broke the World Speed Record

$3.98

In July 1938, the superbly streamlined A4 Pacific class steam locomotive "Mallard" set a world speed record of 126 miles per hour, a record which still stands. This engrossing history covers the rise of the Mallard, a tale that goes back to the late 19th century when the rival railway companies first began to vie with one another to set speed records. It charts the technological development of the steam engine through the early decades of the 20th century into a hugely powerful and truly locomotive machine. Above all, it focuses on the singular and larger-than-life character of Sir Nigel Gresley, the Mallard’s designer and one of history’s most gifted engineers. Packed with interviews with surviving crew members and their relatives, this account also provides an hour-by-hour timeline of the first time the "Blue Steak" attempted to break the record and thunder into the record books.

Flat Out: The Race for the Motorcycle Land Speed Record

Flat Out: The Race for the Motorcycle Land Speed Record

$4.48

Some records are made to be broken. Others stand for a lifetime. And sometimes the achievement of a lifetime is surpassed in days. In the world of motorsports, the one record that has proven the toughest to break is the motorcycle land speed record. Don Vesco rode a streamlined motorcycle to a record-breaking speed of 318 miles per hour at the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1974. It was sixteen years before Dave Campos flew past that record at a speed of 322 miles per hour. And that record had stood for another sixteen years when, on Labor Day Weekend, 2006, a motorcycle daredevil and aspiring writer named Rocky Robinson rode a Suzuki-powered streamliner at an incredible 344 mph. How he got there–and how he faced his greatest challenge at his moment of triumph–is the story Robinson tells in Flat Out." Here is Robinson’s epic decade-long quest to be the fastest motorcycle rider on earth, recounted in all its gritty detail–a compulsively readable account that captures the hard work, sacrifice, and dedication that go into being the world’s best, as well as the sheer terror of riding these two-wheeled rockets nearly six miles per minute.

Violin Concertos

Violinist Hilary Hahn is only 19 years old, but she’s already made more tracks as a classical violinist than most other virtuosos who are twice her age. The prodigy has soloed with a number of prestigious orchestras across the globe, including the New York Philharmonic, and the Berlin and Los Angeles Philharmonics, and her accomplishments just keep getting more impressive. This album marks a world-premiere recording of a violin concerto that was dedicated to her by composer and bassist Edgar Meyer. The concerto, which Meyer claims was written “with Hilary Hahn’s singular voice in mind,” caters to Hahn’s superior technical expertise, allowing her an opportunity to excel at difficult jumps and awkward string-changing passages. Also on the album is a recording of Samuel Barber’s famous Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, which was born at Hahn’s native Curtis Institute of Music. The work was originally commissioned by Curtis violinist Iso Briselli, and then relinquished to Barber after Briselli claimed the finale couldn’t be played. Hahn proves every note is playable and important, as she flaunts her rich tone in the poetic first two movements to build intensity for the Presto in moto perpetuo, which she performs with striking precision.REVIEWS:American Record Guide (7-8/00, pp.85-86) – “…Hilary Hahn’s [performance of the concerto by] Barber will wear well and always be viewed as one of the best…”
